Mapry Co.(headquartered in Tamba City, Hyogo Prefecture; Keiji Yamaguchi, President; hereinafter “Maply”), SBI Sumishin Net Bank, Limited (headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo; Noriaki Maruyama, President (CEO); hereinafter “SBI Sumishin Net Bank”) and its subsidiary, THEMIX Green, Inc. (headquartered in Awaji City, Hyogo Prefecture; Masayuki Yoneyama, President; hereinafter “Hodan”) and Shin Energy Corporation (headquartered in Chuo-ku, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture; Masahiro Inui, President; hereinafter “Shin Energy”) to launch a biochar (*1) demonstration project. (headquartered in Chuo-ku, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture; Masahiro Inui, President; hereinafter “Shin Energy”) to launch a demonstration project for biochar (*1).

As part of this initiative, we have also agreed with Awaji City to launch a demonstration project for the establishment of a local resource recycling scheme by carbonizing abandoned bamboo groves and pruned branches, with the aim of “achieving carbon neutrality by 2050” in the city.
Awaji City has been selected as the first decarbonization leading region (*2) promoted by the Ministry of the Environment in April 2022, and Hodan, as Awaji City’s regional new electric power company (Awajikara), is performing a function toward “achieving carbon neutrality in 2050” in Awaji City.

This demonstration project is one of the most advanced and sustainable initiatives in Japan, in which local governments, regional energy companies, financial institutions, and engineering companies work together to promote biochar production and biochar carbon credit projects by integrating the production, utilization, carbon generation, and sales of biochar.

Through this demonstration project, we will contribute to the acceleration of Awaji City’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and as a leading example, we will work to resolve issues in each region and help realize a decarbonized society.

■Major Initiatives in this Demonstration Project
The following items will be addressed in this demonstration project

1．Study of biochar production business from bamboo, prunings, etc.
2．Promoting decarbonization in the agricultural sector through the use of the J-Credit system (*3) for biochar
3．Efforts to utilize local resources, solve local problems, and recycle resource conversion costs within the region

The amount of carbon stored in biochar can be converted to credits under the J-Credit System. Biochar, when applied to farmland, contributes to improving soil fertility as a soil improvement material, and is considered an effective method of reducing atmospheric CO2 emissions by sequestering persistent carbon in the soil.
SBI Sumishin Net Bank and THEMIX Green will utilize MAPLEY drones and satellites and their technology to measure the amount of biochar applied to farmland and analyze the soil to calculate the amount of biochar needed to improve the soil, and then automatically apply the biochar using an automated electric crawler to efficiently improve the soil and reduce atmospheric CO2 emissions. This system is designed to improve soil efficiency and reduce atmospheric CO2 emissions.
