Started considering a capital and business alliance with SBI Sumishin Net Bank for carbon credit business and forestry DX business.
SBI Sumishin Net Bank, Ltd.(Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President (CEO): Noriaki Maruyama; hereinafter “SBI Sumishin Net Bank”) has agreed with MAPLEY Co. (Head office: Tamba City, Hyogo Prefecture; Representative Director: Keiji Yamaguchi; hereinafter referred to as “MAPLEY”) to maximize the value of forests, reduce environmental impact, and contribute to the development of a sustainable society through carbon credit and forestry DX businesses.
1. Background and purpose of the capital and business alliance
In Japan, addressing global warming is an urgent issue. In order to achieve the Japanese government’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050, in addition to reducing emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases, it is necessary to take measures such as conserving and strengthening forests and other CO2 absorbing resources.
SBI Sumishin Net Bank recognizes that environmental pollution and climate change are important issues, and is working to reduce various environmental burdens under the Environmental Policy established in 2023 in order to further enhance its sustainable management efforts. As part of these efforts, the bank was considering entering the carbon credit business and forestry DX business to address issues such as global warming and destruction of ecosystems.
On the other hand, MAPLY has established solutions using its patented “measurement and analysis of standing tree information” and “wood detection (LiDAR and photogrammetry)” technologies in the field of forestry, and in a report published in FY2022 by the Forestry Agency on its smart forestry construction and deployment project, MAPLY’s “geospatial information application platform” is mentioned as a technology contributing to the realization of smart forestry. MAPLEY’s “application platform for geospatial information” was featured as a technology that contributes to the realization of smart forestry in the Forestry Agency’s report on the smart forestry construction and deployment project published in 2022.
SBI Net Bank and Maply have agreed to consider a capital and business alliance with the aim of contributing to the maximization of forest values, the reduction of environmental burdens, and the development of a sustainable society through the creation and distribution of forest-based carbon credits (carbon credit business) utilizing the J-Credit System (*) and the realization of DX in forest supply chains (forestry DX business), by combining the financial and DX expertise of SBI Net Bank and the solutions of Maply. The companies agreed to consider a capital and business alliance with the aim of maximizing the value of forests, reducing environmental impact, and contributing to the development of a sustainable society through the realization of DX in the forestry supply chain (forestry DX business).
※J-Credit System
This is a system under which the government certifies the amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gas emission reductions and absorption through the introduction of energy-saving and renewable energy facilities, forest management, and other initiatives as “credits”. The issued credits can be used for carbon offsets as a countermeasure against global warming, and can also be sold to companies seeking the credits for profit.
2.Future Development
In collaboration with local governments and forestry cooperatives, we plan to conduct verification experiments on the creation of J-credits from forests, the distribution and utilization of the created J-credits, and the DXing of forest supply chains.
Through the demonstration experiment, we will confirm the significance of our efforts to contribute to forested areas and realize carbon neutrality, and work toward commercialization.
